It was a rollercoaster of emotions for Marvin Dienst, who represented regular driver Maximilian Buhk at theHockenheimring, and the Mercedes-AMG Team Mücke Motorsport squad. On Sunday, however, the Lamertheimer was rewarded with six points for seventh place. The #18 Mercedes AMG GT3 with Space Drive steer-by-wire technology, which requires no mechanical connection at all between the steering unit and steering gearbox, was able to record its second best result of the season on the seventh DTM race weekend at Hockenheim. On Saturday, after a good qualifying session, the race gods were kind to Peter Mücke's team on Sunday. Marvin Dienst drove from 18th on the grid to seventh in a furious race to catch up.
The first race day of the penultimate weekend of the season got off to an ideal start for the 24-year-old local hero, who was contesting his first ever DTM race. He never thought he would be able to compete right from the start at the front of the field. In his first qualifying session in the fiercely contested field, Dienst then started the race on his home track from 10th place on the grid. After a good start, he was able to work his way up to sixth place in the field, but after the first lap of the race the safety car came into action following an incident at the hairpin. After the restart on lap 5 he got back into the race well and was able to defend his position until he got caught in traffic and lost two positions before his mandatory pit stop. After that, Dienst sorted himself into 11th place and was on course for points before a pit stop still to be made by Lucas di Grassi, until he was nudged into a thankless 11th place by a jostle.
Unfortunately, Sunday qualifying did not go as well as hoped. This meant that the second race day of the weekend got off to a rather frustrating start for Marvin Dienst. Starting almost from the back of the field, only from 18th place, Marvin Dienst started a furious chase. Already at the pit stop after lap 11 he was unstoppable and finished Sunday's race after 34 laps in 7th place. The pace was right, and a better starting position would have meant a lot more. In his fastest lap, for example, Marvin Dienst was not two tenths slower than the day's winner Lucas Auer, also in the Mercedes-AMG GT3 and only just 5.5 seconds behind the third place on the podium. The Berlin-based Traditionstream was pleased with the DTM debutant.
Peter Mücke, Team Principal Mercedes-AMG Team Mücke Motorsport had mixed feelings with regard to the second qualifying session: "When something like this happens, of course you're not happy. But the important thing is not to resign, team and driver. And we managed that well today. We got a result out of this package, the second best this season. We're also seeing progress in steering development. The data we generate gives us feedback into the system via Schaeffler Paravan's engineering and important insights for the car. If you look at it, we are close and that is ultimately the goal. We want to develop, collect data, but we also want to deliver in high performance."
Marvin Dienst on his DTM debut: "We had some ups and downs. In general, we showed today what we are capable of. I'm still sorry about qualifying today. My first weekend is over, I scored my first points - also for the team - in the DTM, so we can be satisfied. The space drive system is generally not a disadvantage, it clearly shows that there is a lot of potential. In general, our goal is to generate data, reel off kilometers while understanding the car and tires, and now the engineers have to draw the conclusions."
Marvin Dienst scored six points for Mercedes-AMG Team Mücke Motorsport and remains in 11th place in the team standings with 17 points. Just one week before the season finale at the Norisring, Mercedes-AMG has already clinched the manufacturers' championship with 507 points, currently followed by Ferrari with 336 points and Audi.
The season finale at the Norisring starts in just under a week, with one race each on Saturday and Sunday. The race weekend starts on Friday, October 8, with the 45-minute free practice sessions at 12:05 a.m. and 4:05 p.m.. On Saturday, 09 October, qualifying will be held at 10 a.m. for the first grid position. The race start is traditionally at 1:30 p.m.. The race Sunday also starts at 10 a.m. with qualifying for the 2021 DTM season finale, which will again begin at 1:30 p.m..
