Madison Wilson, an Australian swimmer who won gold at the Tokyo Olympics and competes for a Los Angeles professional swimming team, has announced she is in hospital with COVID-19.
Wilson made the announcement on Instagram Sunday that she would not be able to compete for the recent Los Angeles Current bout in Italy’s International Swimming League as she was taken to the hospital “for further treatment and observation.”
Wilson said she was vaccinated twice against COVID, but is someone who experienced a breakthrough infection of the virus, which occurred when the delta variant of the virus emerged.
During his time in Tokyo, Wilson competed in three events, winning gold in the women’s 4×100 freestyle and bronze in the 4×200 freestyle. Less than two weeks ago he won the 100 and 200 freestyle for the current.

She said that even though she took the right precautions, she believes that being “physically and mentally ill” made her more susceptible to getting the virus. He described his experience as a “wake up call”.
“Covid is serious business and when it comes it hits very hard. I’d be stupid not to say I wasn’t afraid. I’m so lucky for all my family, friends and support people. I can’t believe how much love I get. it was shown and I will forever be indebted to these people, “he wrote.
Yahoo! Sport reported that Wilson claimed she had “underlying chest and lung problems” and the vaccine protected her from developing worse symptoms.
The 27-year-old also posted a message sent to her by teammates in Los Angeles.
“Special thanks to my incredible Los Angeles family, you have not and will never see a team with a bigger heart than theirs, away from the pool the most incredible group of compassionate people and in the pool we are fighting with every bit of strength,” Wilson wrote. “I’m taking some time to rest and I’m sure I’ll be ready to recover in no time.”
